Example:
Let’s calculate GPA using an example. Suppose George attained A, A+, B+, and B grades in Chemistry, Physics, Math, and Computer in his first semester. Each course has 3 credit hours. Calculate the GPA with current grades.
Step 1:
Write down the grades letters you have acquired in all courses and their credit hours for the semester you want to calculate GPA.
Chemistry = A, Physics = A+, Math = B+, Computer = B
Step 2:
Refer to the chart below to find the grade point against each grade letter you obtained for every course.
A+ \(= 4.33\), A \(= 4.00\), B+ \(= 3.33\), B \(= 3.00\)
Step 3:
Multiply credit hours of each course with its grade point, which you have calculated in the above step.
Chemistry \( = 4.00\times 3 = 12.00\)
Physics \(= 4.33 \times 3 = 12.99\)
Math \( = 3.33 \times 3 = 9.99\)
Computer \(= 3.00 \times 3 = 9.00\)
Step 4:
After multiplying, add all the resulted figures together and divide it by the total number of credit hours.
Total grade points \( = 12.00 + 12.99 + 9.99 + 9.00 = 43.98\)
Total credit hours \(= 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12\)
GPA \(=\dfrac{43.98}{12}\)
GPA \(= 3.66\)
So, George will get a GPA of approx. \( 3.66\) with the given grades obtained in his first semester.
