What grade do I need on my final?

If you are wondering about what do I need on the final or tires of asking your classmates, "calculate my final grades," then don't worry. You don't need to do it anymore. It can be determined that what grade is needed to achieve the desired result in the final examination. You will need three things to calculate that:

  • Current grade in the course
  • Desired grade in the course
  • The final exam percentage weight

We will assume all these values in this example. Let's suppose the weight of the final exam is 30 %, your current course grade is 86 %, and 90 % is the desired course grade.
We have to calculate the weight of the current course. It can be calculated by subtracting the final course grade from 100 %. As we know, the final course grade weight is 30 %, which means the weight for the current course is 70 %:

(Total course) 100% – % (Final Exam) 30= (current grade in course) 70%

Now multiply the current course weight to the current course grade.

Weight of current grade in the course (decimal) × Current course grade

In this example, the current course grade is 86 %, and the current course weight is 70 %.

0.7 × 86 = 60.2

60.2 is the current grade weighted value.

Subtract 60.2 from the desired grade value, which is 90 %:

Desired grade value – the weighted value of your current grade

90 – 60.2 = 29.8

Divide 29.8 by the weighted value of the final exam (in decimal), which is 30 %.

29.8 / 0.3 = 99.3 %

So, you need 99.3 % in the final exams if your current course grade is 86 %, the final course weight is 30 %, and the desired course grade is 90 %. You can also use the final exam calculator above to save yourself from these hectic calculations.

How can I improve my final grades?

Improvements are always possible as long as grades are concerned. You can improve your memories, academic skills, grades, and ultimately university experience by adding only these five actions to your regular study routine.

1.    Focus on the outline of the course

You know that sheet is important that you generally get at the beginning of every subject. The outline of the course not only tells you what content you will cover, but it also shows you the breakdown of grades between tests, attendance tasks, and projects. Without the knowledge of the breakdown of marks, you will never be able to achieve the mark you want for a subject.

Once the lecturer gives you this sheet in the first week of the semester, underline the assessments and marks they have been allocated. Make sure you know the due dates of all the evaluations and ask your lecturer immediately if they are not listed.

2.    Make efforts for every single mark

Exams, tests, assignments, and projects depending upon the subject and lecturer, are all allocated distinct marks. You should know how many marks are assigned for each evaluation.

Write them down on the front page of your lecture notes as you receive your marks over the semester for assignments, tests, or anything. Monitoring your progress will help you to stay motivated by knowing that you can't afford a slip in order to gain good grades. You will know exactly how many marks you want to achieve your desired grade when you go to the exam for that subject.

3.    Take notes and revise them

During the lectures, take detailed notes about the topic and revise them on the same day. Explain the topic to your classmates and friends. You learn more when you know that you need to teach or explain something to someone else. The time it takes to read your lecture notes every week is 20 minutes, but no one is willing to do it. Let's say that you do four subjects each semester to put this in perspective. It will be an extra hour every week if you spend 15 minutes on each subject to read your lecture notes.

Lectures can be revised in spare time like traveling or riding a bus to home. You will be able to learn the concepts easily if you find the time to revise your lectures.

4.    Read past exam papers

This is one of the sneaky tricks that the majority of university students do not use. It helps study better and reduces the last-minute stress of asking a question like how to solve this problem before the examination.

You should log on to the library website at the university one week before the semester begins, to download and print all past examinations for each subject. Then you should look at each question after each lecture and tutorial and see whether or not any of them are answerable by you. You will find that, probably, you are not able to understand most of them until at least the third week.

You should have compiled answers to all the questions by the last week of the classes. Now, before you take the exam, you can spend some time practicing and addressing difficult questions. You can ask your teachers about any topic from the past papers during the term because teachers are easily available in that duration. Note all the tricky questions and approach your subject teacher to understand the concepts that you are struggling with.

5.    Make a plan – weekly or monthly

This last tip is for those who are committed to improving their grades by adopting a solid learning technique. It can be implemented simply but needs prior commitment. You can identify what you want to do, what work you have to do, and all other commitments that you have to fulfill by establishing a weekly or monthly plan.

Your plan should be a solid one, which should reflect your commitment to studies. Some students make plans but focus more on sports and other activities rather than study. Separate plans can be set for your extracurricular activities, but a study plan should revolve more around learning. In general, you should not plan far beyond two weeks. Make the study plans for the coming weeks or months more aggressive as compared to previous ones. It will boost your confidence and give you an idea about your preparation for exams. This step is very necessary and practically perfect to improve your grades in the final exams as well as your overall knowledge.
